“Narratives of Illness” (HLTHAGE4J03)

This seminar explores the role that narratives of illness play in describing, shaping and interrogating the experiences of those who are 'unwell'. Increasingly, both personal and collective stories and experiences related to disease and illness are being recognized as fundamental to the study of health. This course asks students to examine narratives of illness through a variety of different mediums, including film, literature, autobiography/memoir, poetry, and participatory approaches to storytelling. Beyond the narratives themselves, the course encourages students to consider the role that narrative plays in shaping both how individuals experience illness and how they interact with the medical system and other forms of health care.
